Craft idea for winter days: homemade snow globe

December 11, 2017

If you are stuck with activities to do before Christmas (with or without kids), I have an idea for you. It came from my daughter Lily. She asked if she could make her own snow globe (or actually, a glitter globe). And I thought it was an excellent idea! This is my contribution for the 2018 Christmas creative countdown organised by Gina from Willow day. You can follow the other contributions  there every day as well as on her instagram. I love all the scandinavian inspired christmas ideas, I'm sure you will love them too.I have already did acraft ideas for the autumn post. And also gave you inspiration forsome advent activities too! This is the perfect follow up:

Little warning note: This is not an ideal craft idea to do with your small children (I would say below 5). You can do it, but will have to guide them all along as it involves super glue and small manipulations. However, you can do it even if you don't have children with you or at all!

What you need:The great thing with this craft idea is that you can recycle a lot of items:

  • A glass jar (used or new) with a flat wide lid

  • Figurines kids don't play with any longer or used for decoration (christmas related or not)- Make sure those figurines can be in water without losing their colours or paint.

  • Glitter ( we used rainbow glitter, gold hearts, silver stars, silver hearts...)

  • Super glue

  • If your lid isn't flat, you can use a thin layer of wood/plastic to put on it but beware that wood and super glue isn't a great match, so we used wood glue on that one

How to do it - steps:Gather all the material. Once you have decided, put the various settings on your lids to see if it looks nice or not. And put back the glass jar just to see if your figurines are high enough to be seen once the jar is closed. You can then start the glueing process. If you are using super glue, don't forget to press your item for 20 seconds before withdrawing your hand. You can see on the previous picture that we sometimes used little wood stands to have the figurine a little higher. I used wood glue for these and then the super glue. Ideally, you have to wait overnight for it to be glued perfectly well. Don't worry if you don't and if you start the next steps. if it's not glued properly, you can easily dry everything again and glue them back properly afterwards. It's tedious but doable. The day after, pour water in your jar. It has to be totally full with water. Then mix in the glitter you want to use and mix well. It will sit in the bottom a lot and also make some stacks at the beginning. But after a few days, it will settle all well. When you close everything, water will pour out so do it over a sink if possible. And then shake it until all the exceeding water is out. There you go, you just created your first magical snow/glitter globe. Maybe your Christmas glitter globe even! Easy peasy! Are you going to make one? show me your creations! Let me know if you have any questions too.And some outtakes ;)
