We also painted wooden eggs this year. Spot Lily's little rabbit! The fun thing to do around Easter is of course a Egg hunt. Even as they grow older, we don't have to find really complicated hideaways. There will always be eggs that will be missed! At the ready? GO!Well done kids!Time to share (which is serious business) and eat!I
After the Autumn craft ideas and the winter ones here and here, le me give you some ideas for spring. Easter is past for some but not for others. So there is still time to do some Egg dyes and hunts. And if you feel like giving a spring look to your home, I have some deco ideas for you too (but you have to be patient, it's a the end of the post)!I have done egg dyeing before. I even blogged about it a couple of years ago. My first try was on brown and pink eggs and I used red cabbage, red onions, beets and turmeric. Last year, I finally found some white eggs and used red cabbage and blueberries for rich blue tones that matched my instagram feed.Did you know that you can only find brown eggs in Belgium's stores? And almost only white eggs in Sweden? Well, let me tell you that white eggs are much better for egg dyes so if you are in Belgium, I advise to double the times for living the eggs in the dyes. And expect slightly different tones! This year, I used beets again but cooked them less long (hence the beige tone), red onions skin (orangey tones) and avocado (for a really nice pink)! Here is the recipe and steps:
Ingredients and tools
This is what I used for this round, but you should go through the links in
and see what colours you prefer!
- White eggs preferably- The skin of one red onion (more if using brown eggs)- The skin and stone of one avocado- one beet- 3 tea spoons of white vinegar- old transparent tights, gauze or tight socks- flowers and herbs picked around you- glass jars
Steps:
1. Cook in three separate pots the three different dyeing ingredients. Check the colours regularly as if you want light colours like I have now, you shouldn't cook it too long. I left the avocado longer than the beet (which I wanted a slight beige of) and the onion (the more you cook, the more red the colour of the egg)2. Meanwhile, empty the eggs by making a small hole on one side and a tiny bit bigger one on the other side. Be very careful in that step as it can easily break the egg. Don't screw in it, just break a bit the tiny hole you have done to make it bigger. Use the eggs to make an omelette :) .3. You can either dye them as they are or you can put some flowers, herbs, leaves on them. They will hold more easily with a tiny bit of water. Cover the eggs with some bit of tights or gauze. Try to make it really tight so it will actually be quite a nice drawing in the end. But again, be gentle as they are quite fragile when emptied.4. If you are doing it with small kids, I advice to cook the eggs, they will be less fragile and heavier (but they rot quicker unless you eat them straight after the dyeing.5. Once you are satisfied with the colour of your dyes, let them cool for a while.6. Then add a tea spoon of vinegar in each of them and pour into glass jars.7. Fill each of the jars with the eggs. They might start floating back up so you should plan to have something to hold them down in the end before closing.8. Leave them the whole night. If you want to have different shades. Take away one egg at a time away at different dipping times (I would say every 5/6 hours).9. Empty the jars . Take off the tights and the plants, rince and leave them to dry a little. Et voila!
Egg dye spring activities
If you also feel like giving a bit of a spring vibe to your place, there is nothing better than flowers and a change of colours from winter to spring. I do that every year. Give up the brown, dark green and grey tones and replace them with pink, yellow, white and lighter greens! I have a strups ring, my son got me for Christmas and it's a great way to change the mood of your room every now and then (you can check more of my latest rings on my instagram): I also went around and cut some branches hanging around. It's funny the lengthI go to these days: I rang some door bells to get a magnolia one from a front garden too!! Put some small posies and bouquets. Switch them around. It will make you feel so good!Soon the light will be here again and we will all be gaining some energy. I hope you had or will have a nice Easter and are ready to finally welcome spring outside and in your homes!
