A simple winter salad recipe
As an introduction, I have to say, I just fell in love with those beets ! Aren't they beautiful. I think they look like roses... Anyway, this wasn't the beginning I thought I would do. Here is just a super simple recipe for a salad that will brighten the gloomy winter days:These beets are Chioggas. Or you can also call them candy stripes beetroot. They are an italian heirloom variety from the 19th century. And they are very tasty raw or cooked (once cooked, they become pink). Here is how you can eat this salad:

You know I love the change of seasons. And I plan on sharing a few things you can do in each of them every year. Last year I showed you some cool autumn crafts and ideas to do with your kids. This year, I am sharing an apple and pear tart recipe. I took an apple tart recipe from Green kitchen stories and changed it a bit to my taste. It's really easy to make, vegan and gluten free for those who need to cut their dairies and wheats. But it's anyway very nice for the others too! You can find the original recipe here and below with some tiny twists:

Summer recipes ideas: cakes and popsicles
Summer is here! And it's time to use all the available veg and fruits to the max before it's only apples and pears. That's one of the thing I love about this season. I thought it would be a good idea to share some recipes I tried recently. Some cakes and popsicles which I think are perfect to try especially when it's hot outside. If you like red fruits and elderflower, follow me along, you will love these:

I have been wanting to try these vegan raw mini cheesecakes types forever. I know it might not sound appealing to a lot of you but it actually really is delicious! And I'm not saying it's very easy to make, but it's not too much trouble either. And it's super healthy. You should give it a try and believe me, you will actually like it:I found this recipe and adapted it slightly. A funny thing is people who tasted it found that it tasted coconut a lot and I was saying: I don't remember using coconut at all, it must be something else! But in fact that recipe uses a lot of coconut milk and some coconut oil (I have a fragrance free one but still...). So indeed, if you don't like coconut, that recipe isn't for you !Also, before I head on the actual ingredients and steps, a little disclaimer: the flowers on my pictures are not edible. They are wax flowers actually. Very beautiful and I love the colours of it with the blueberry cakes! But don't do it at home if you know there is a risk someone will actually eat it !

There is a tradition at least in France, Quebec and Belgium right after Christmas. Eating a cake by the time of the epiphany : "La galette des rois". In the north of France and Belgium, it's basically two puff pastries with an almond paste inside. It's a delicious sweet thing. But that's not what makes it special. It's the fact that a little figurine (most often in porcelain) is hiding inside. And whoever gets it becomes the kind or queen of the day. Traditions may vary from family to family on that but I'll focus on mine and will give you a recipe I did this year that you might like (even outside of Epiphany days!):In order to find out who is going to be king or queen, the youngest child hides under the table and says the names of the guests around every time a piece is served. When the person eating it finds out, he or she becomes queen or king and gets to choose whoever is the queen or king with them.In many families, the king or queen can demand things their ways the rest of the day. We have done it a couple of times when the kids were younger but now we just have family and friends gathering. And the kids are already happy if they just have the figurine in their piece! When you buy it in bakeries, they give you those crowns with the galette you buy. But when you make it yourself you have to make your crown so Lily did it this year:And of course the best is to have guests to share it with!So now on to the proper recipe:

We have to leave our lovely house in Lidingö so we are trying to enjoy all the good things from the island as much as possible. We discovered this natural protected area and decided to stop there for a picnic (and of course take a few pics along the way):Fields with dandelions, cow parsley and buttercups. Say no more. We got the perfect place to enjoy the beautiful nature of the island...I always make more or less the same things when I go on picnics. It's often sandwiches, salads, cooked eggs, fruits, sometimes I make a pie... and I always bring tea! I would love to hear about your ideas for a picnic too to broaden my choices! We love these family times in the nature, it's so so good! And a really cute forest to wander in around the field, what else? They have a little cafe not too far. One of these typical Swedish red house, selling gorgeous cakes and a lot of coffee: If you are ever setting your foot on Lidingö, and it's not winter (because then I recommend skating on a lake): go there! Give me some more picnic meal ideas, I would love to hear them!
Spinach Feta pie from Green Kitchen Stories
Quick post to tell you that yesterday I made this amazing Spinach- Feta gluten free pie from Green Kitchen Stories. And that made me think that It was a long time ago I talked about for my favourite food blog. Actually, just when I was starting to do this blog and I was taking a course on wordpress. And this was more an assignment than a thought through post. This time, I want to say a little more:This was so simple to do. This is partly why I love this blog so much. Recipes are easy, they taste like they look and you usually don't need thousands of ingredients. Plus, all recipes are vegetarian, mostly gluten free and generally very healthy. And they often give a vegan alternative too.Green kitchen stories started as a blog with lots of recipes. It's a really cool couple who runs it, David and Luise respectively from Sweden and Denmark. Luise is qualified as a nutritional therapist so you can trust that the recipes will be good for you. They have since then released several cookbooks. All with beautiful photographs and recipes. But the best I find is their app. It's one of the best I have. It exists in several languages. The explanations, the list of ingredients, all that is great. And you have a timer included in the recipe steps. What else? You can usually find all their recipes on the blog anyway. The one for the Spinach and Feta pie is here. I also really like this butternut squash feta pie that my friend Marianne cooked once. I also really loved this aubergine curry and these spinach crepes. Their youtube videos are just genius. And beautiful! Now I'm off to make their Shakshuka for dinner. Bon appétit!

Dam Sum
Dam sum is by far the best dim sum restaurant in Brussels. Those who know me, know that I have this crazy adoration for dim sums. I love them, I crave them. I even went to Beijing for our honey moon more or less to be able to have a feast of them. It was never a thing I could find in Brussels. Some restaurants had it, sometimes better than others but if I really wanted to fulfil my need, I would go to London (I could list my favourite dim sum restaurants there on the blog maybe one day). Then Dam Sum opened, and that my friends, was a life changer! They have really nice bbq buns and classic har gao among other choices. Their shrimp gyozas are amazing. Their overall menu isn't so big but it's fresh, they don't add glutamate and if you are lucky you can even see them making some of the dim sums in front of you. The cherry on the cake is their speciality: the xiao long bao, which is a steamed bun that includes a little soup you suck before eating the ravioli. Simply delicious! Right now they have one with some truffle taste, you have to go try it.Here is a little movie I made, again with my not so great camera, but you get the idea:They don't take reservation, so you have to go a little early or expect some waiting time, but the turn over is ok . They even have a Sunday brunch now. Go there and let me know what you think!DAM SUM11 place de la Trinité, 1050 Bruxelles02 538 08 10
